Welcome! My name is Briana Nelson, but my family calls me Bree. Now that you've entered into my world, you can call me Bree too. My father, Larry Williams, passed away on November 19, 2021. Although, we were sad to see him leave this world, we were happy that his mind, body and soul were free from a dreadful disease called Lewy body dementia.
Have you ever heard of Lewy body dementia (LBD)? If you answered NO, you are not alone. Mom and I had never heard of LBD before. To help you understand exactly what it is, I will quote the definition directly from the National Institute on Aging website. "Lewy body dementia (LBD) is a disease associated with abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain. These deposits, called Lewy bodies, affect chemicals in the brain whose changes, in turn, can lead to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood. Lewy body dementia is one of the most common causes of dementia. LBD affects more than 1 million individuals in the United States."
Mom was his 24 hour caregivHER. I was a caregivHER to him too, but due to being a wife, mom and employed I was unable to provide round the clock care for him. Dad experienced a lot over the past several years dealing with LBD and having an aggressive prostate cancer. As his caregivHERs, we found limited support groups that catered to his illnesses as well as providing as outlet for us. I joined a few groups on social media and one in particular for Lewy Body Dementia helped us TREMENDOUSLY.
Fast forward......I decided to help other caregivHERs by creating a supportive online community for past and present female caregivHERs around the world. I know men are caregivers too, but this is one mom and I could specifically relate to because we are women. We, especially mom, went through sooooo many changes physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, etc. while being a caregivHER to her husband (my dad).
I want you to know that you are NOT alone! Let's support each other throughout this tough time. Thank you for joining our support group!
P.S. If you would like share your story, have a special prayer request, or would like to ask questions to our community, please email me at [email protected] It can be done anonymously too.
