Managing Negative Intrusive Thoughts

Managing Negative Intrusive Thoughts

Oct 23, 2021

Our brain is naturally hardwired to focus more on negativity instead of positivity, and this is known as negativity bias. This is a mechanism/tendency that has been evolutionarily built into our human brain since our ancestors had to constantly look out for threats in order to survive. Hence, humans are naturally more prone to having negative thoughts as compared to positive ones. The problem comes when we dwell on these negative thoughts that we are automatically conditioned to have by assigning meaning or value to them, even when they are far from “facts”. This can be self-limiting, and inhibits us from moving forward. Psychologists had linked excessive negative thinking to depression, anxiety, chronic worry and low self-esteem.

Although we are unable to stop the intrusive thoughts from appearing (most of the time they appear automatically), it is possible to control and choose the way we interact with these negative thoughts.

More elaborated in episode 17.
