Regular Expression in Google Form - For Teachers!

Hello teachers, we know that giving classes and homework for students remotely is a challenging tasks. Moreover, you still need to handle all the technical issue apart from teaching. Today, we would like to help you to address one of the problematic issues in Google Form. Google Forms keeps mark the correct answer as wrong in the short question type quiz. We will also teach you on how to use Regular Expression or RegEx in Google Form to reduce the wrong marking issue.

Why Google Form Mark Correct Answer as Wrong?

The reason behind is when you key-in the answer in Google Form, it will compare students’ input with your answer and mark it as correct when it is totally matched. This is applicable to Short Answer type question in Google Form. In other words, if the answer has additional/missing space or any symbol, Google Form will mark it as wrong.

Introducing Regular Expression in Google Form

Regular Expression or also known as RegEx is a pattern matching features available in Google Form. The typical use case is you can have a pattern matching features for form responder to follow. For example: postal code consist of 5 digit numbers and other than that, the input should be counted as invalid. Therefore, RegEx can be use in Google Form postal code input.

To set RegEx in Google Form, go to the short answer or paragraph type question, click on the 3 dots icon on bottom right of the question, select response validation.
