Family Court Awareness Month Proclamation - Williamsville, NY

Nov 24, 2021

The Village of Williamsville, NY joined the 200+ other city, states, and counties by proclaiming November as Family Court Awareness Month last night.

Williamsville is the first village to make such a commitment in New York State. We are deeply grateful to Mayor Debra Rogers, as well as members of the village board for welcoming our efforts and for standing boldly with children and protective parents nationwide.

As always, our deepest gratitude goes out to Tina Swithin of our sister-organization One Mom's Battle as well.

We are proud to collaborate with you in advocating for the safety of children and families nationwide. As this movement grows, we would like to once more confirm our commitment to ensuring that child safety as the top priority in all custody cases.

We envision a research-led and trauma-informed family court system that acts with urgency and without gender bias to protect children from abuse. We also envision a family court system that integrates trauma-informed judicial practices.

At present time, very few states have requirements for judges and other court personnel to be trained in domestic violence and post-separation abuse.

We believe that this is part of why the family court system is so damaging and we also believe that is why an estimated 58,000 children are ordered into contact with an abusive parent on an annual basis. We believe that is why 815 children (at present time) have died at the hands of a separating/divorcing parent in the last decade. We also believe that advocating on a local, community-level can initiate change and that by spreading awareness we can secure families in a better way.

We look forward to our movement growing within New York State and beyond.
