FMF: Day Fifteen (Ten Day Tale Part V)

Sep 15, 2021

Martin’s phone buzzed around on the table; the volume of calls he had received that morning had caused it to travel eighteen inches across his desk. All of them, he was sure, would be from his office. It had been two weeks since Amy had attempted to reach him during the day. His manager at the post office had been sympathetic to his situation at first, giving him as long as he needed before returning to work, advising him to check in with them after two weeks.

That date had long since passed, and each day that went by brought further voicemails. Martin had ignored them all - hadn’t even bothered to listen to them - choosing instead to spend his time in his study, a small lamp on his desk the only source of light apart from his computer screen.

The second time Martin and Amy took a drive came about by a happy accident. Having lost track of time and leaving their daughters home alone, Amy had burst through the front door in a tornado of panic.

“Girls? GIRLS?!”

“Sweetie, it’s nearly midnight. They’ll probably be in bed.”

“They’re teenagers, Martin. They could have gone out or had an accident or God knows what!”

As Amy spiralled further, a door opened upstairs.

“What, Mum?”

“Oh thank goodness you’re alright!”

“What are you on about?” Gemma leaned onto the landing, her wet hair hanging across her face. “We’ve been here all night." Her blue eyes narrowed. "Why? Where have you been?”
