Quarterly update - Q1 2022

Apr 04, 2022

Last Quarter

There were a fixes for a couple of countries for Rain Alarm. Also a few radar station were added or came online again after a long time for Mexico, Croatia, and Denmark.

More time spent on the Deep Learning ideas. The Simple AI idea for making the alarms a little more reliable works well in theory, but not so much in practice. Still trying to “save” the idea, but I don’t have much hope. Filter AI is coming along, but takes always a long time to train, tweak, test, train, … Eventuall this should be a big help avoiding false positives in the radar data that are not rain.

For Severe Weather there were fixes for Canada and the US. In the Android app I'm trying something new in the Beta version called Rewarded Ads. In case you haven't bought any in-app-purchase you can choose to watch an immersive ad and in turn it unlocks all available features for a week. I'm testing it to see if people would use it and the turnaround is better. This will take a while to get the numbers, but if it works well, it is also something that would be coming to Rain Alarm.

Mind Leak was discovered by the press again, most notably by the UK Stuff magazine (print) and the news site of El Español. This didn't translate into many downloads though. There also was a small update to introduce a main switch for all apps in case you are at work or similar.

For Altitudeless there was a fix for an annoying bug that caused the app to show too much data in the diagrams at once.

Other than that

Lots of running, getting my girlfriend’s old rental flat in order, getting our shared flat in shape. And then there was the Goggins Challenge. It meant running 4 miles (6.4 km) every 4 hours for 48 hours totalling 48 miles (77 km). It was tough, but went well endurance-wise. Just the following 2 days felt like a hangover, mentally and physically. Worth it and I’m glad I did it. Especially making it a charity run for Ukrainian refugees – thanks for everybody participating!

Waiting for Spring...
