How to Make Your Pitch Deck Perfect as a Beginner

Dec 20, 2021

At my previous work, I prepared pitch decks for investors for 3 years and attended meetings with them. Thanks to the presentations and observations I made during these 3 years, I learned very well what investors wanted to see.

I have to point out that I am not a very good designer or a very good writer. I just know what the target audience wants to see and write appropriate short stories for them. I back it up with math and statistics. By avoiding too much embellishment, I don't allow to distract from the focus. The experiences I will convey will also be in this direction.

Here's what investors really want to see, from my experience:

  • Does the business model make sense?

  • Can this business really make money by selling its products and services?

  • Can the business be financed?

  • Is the team adequate to do this job?

  • Is the size of the target market worth doing this job?

In fact, they don't expect you to fall in love with your work. They don't care about your passions either. As far as I have observed, their focus is on the potential of the business and they expect you to prove it mathematically. That's all.

Here are the things they don't care about:

  • Your passion and dreams

  • Colorful slides

  • Animations

  • Amazing designs and illustrations

  • How fun your team is

  • All the research and calculations you have done so far

  • "The amazing case" that transformed your life

  • 40 page long articles and reports

  • Fun visuals or memes

  • Your super quality jokes

So my advice to all founders is "keep it simple"

You don't want to bore and distract your potential investors. You have only one task during the meeting; prove your potential and get that money. Anything that does not serve this is actually useless and boring. You may have made presentations a few times, but your investors are making these meetings very often and want to get results as soon as possible.

Do not forget this. Keep your pitch deck as simple and short as possible. Just add the necessary stuff. Prove your potential. These are enough for a good result.
