8.10.2022 | Mixdown can begin...

Aug 11, 2022

Wednesday? Progress? Sure.

Today I finished recording the backing vocals to both Heaven and Industrial Wasteland. I also thought these were the last of the vocals, but it was not. What started as a simple process, of course, turned into experimentation with harmonies and such.

I felt a sense of nostalgic loneliness listening to them, even as I am excited to report these two songs are now living in Ableton, ready for a mixdown. That's two thus far. The others should be ready according to my notes, but I will know this to be 100% certain when I open the project files and export them into Live. I'm liking this idea of tracking in Reaper and mixing in Ableton. It feels almost as if I'm leaving one studio location in favor of another, each with a different vibe. I'm at home on Live, but it was very easy to comp in reaper, so I'll stick to this method for the moment.

I did change part of the methodology a little to do the renders, and I'm nerdily mentioning this here so as to remember that this process does work.

Remember to un-check 'warp' and make sure everything reads "0" as to the start of the file. Even a few frames difference means out-of-sync vocals. When properly done, the vocals sit in with the rest of the tracks like champs.

I may have overdone the harmonies on Industrial Wasteland. Seven extra takes to be exact. But they sound good. I just have to make sure the song does not wind up over-indulged' in that area.

Good stuff! Now off to cook some chicken and make myself some salad to go with it...

And then, just after lunch...

OK. In Your Smile is ready for Mixdown as well (Ableton). All vocals are there. And... I found an "intermission" track I'd worked on that is supposed to go on the tail end... It's something that... Had I not made notes, I might have gone past it. Thank goodness for journaling things...

Nostalgia is also ready to be mixed too. I copied my effects settings but may start mixing from scratch on that one. There's a delay from the original demo I do like. I am going to go on a little hunt for the tone before I call it a day...

That leaves just one more... And as I type this, The Pain I Inherited From You has been imported into Ableton for mixdown too, sporting a few harmonies that happened today to boot.

It's official. The mixing stages of Abandoned Works A now can begin...
