Friendship at Christmas

Friendship at Christmas

Dec 18, 2022

There's something special about friendship, isn't there? I really don't consider myself as having more than a handful of close friends. And they are scattered across America. There's nobody nearby that I hang out with on a regular basis. And that's okay most days... because I can pick up the phone to call, text, or video chat with any one of my around-the-country pals at any time. We are there for one another.

I bet you understand completely. I expect you have your own circle of friends, even if it's just you and one other person.

Sometimes I complain about not having more local friendships. During those times, I find myself jumping into the dating pool. It's fun--mostly--but not as fulfilling as hanging out with someone who already knows me and whom I already know well. So I pick up the phone and call California or New Jersey or Washington state. Occasionally, I'll get brave enough to contact a friend from the past...in Connecticut, Florida, or Minnesota.

Earlier this year I met someone from Kentucky and once a month we and our kids get together. We have much in common and enjoy one another's company. She's easy to talk to; apparently, so am I.

I'm grateful for friends and acquaintances all through the year but at Christmas, I think about others more than usual. I wonder how y'all are doing... is the season joyful for you or are you struggling this year? Maybe a mix?

Even if I haven't contacted you lately, please know you're in my thoughts. I wish you the best Christmas or Chanukah or Kwanzaa ever. If you don't happen to celebrate any thing this year, then I wish you the best December ever.

I get nostalgic this time of year...thinking back, considering today, wondering about my tomorrow. And I'm grateful for friends who stand with me and invite me to stand with them...to laugh, listen, cry, get angry, feel joy...whatever thought or emotion needs expressed in the moment. Because being there for one another equals friendship.

May your December be full of it.

Peace,

Erica
