Group Stage drama

Nov 29, 2022

We're in the 2nd week of World Cup drama, and those of us who love football are loving it. I'm in the US, and to be honest, most people don't care. I'm over here wondering what Ronaldo is going to do today while these folks walk around like nothing is going on.

Odd state of affairs.

The World Cup started last Sunday, and if you're on Twitter, you know all about the housing issues, the weather, and the political controversy. And politics took the main stage for several days. Seems Qatar has ruled homosexuality illegal and commentators from western nations are having a fit. They will fall unconscious when they find out all the other nations that hold the same values. Get the couch ready for the next World Cup.

The hosts have banned alcohol as well, which really takes the biscuit.

In the future, FIFA has to choose a place where people can go and have fun. Fun! It's supposed to be a party where people from all nations can come together and have a great time.

But let's focus on the football, shall we?

EARLY MATCHES

Saudi Arabia upset Argentina 2-1 and Leo Messi's 5th World Cup appearance was looking shaky. Were the underdogs lucky or really good? Well, they managed a very effective offside trap that caught Argentina 10 times and had 3 goals called back. They were really good. With that win, Saudi Arabia's King Salman declared a national holiday and MBS gifted each player a Bentley. Nice.

Mexico tied Poland 0-0, and US tied Wales 1-1. Shocking from Poland, who I thought would win that easily. Our American team looked decent until that penalty. People on Twitter were asking for Gio Reyna. You're not going to win with the best player on the bench, guys.

Germany was upset by Japan 2-1. Lots of mistakes and poor defending cost the Germans.

Portugal beat my adopted home country of Ghana 3-2. Ronaldo opened the scoring with a penalty and his teammates handled the rest. As a fan, I don't like to see scores like this one, as it shows a weakness in defending. If it's 3-0 that's great, but 3-2 you're just trading goals. But a W is a W.

And I'll wrap this up with Brazil beating Serbia 2-0. Those Brazilians have a lot of swag, don't they? In football (and MMA) it's always the Brazilians defining greatness and they did it again on the pitch. Richarlison led the way with a brace, got proposed to by a teenager on Instagram, and saw his followers increase by 4 million. What a year for him.

More to come!
