Heard about the Pareto Principle? The 80/20 rule?

Jun 01, 2021

If you haven’t, the 80/20 rule is a principle that theorizes 80% of the effect comes from 20% of the cause. Pareto, an Italian economist, noticed that 80% of the peas in his garden came from 20% of the pods and 80% of the wealth in Italy came from 20% of the country’s population.

In screenwriting this can be applied in a variety of ways.

20% of the effort accounts for 80% of the results. 80% of your best writing will come from 20% of the time you spend writing.

80% of your income will come from 20% of your screenplays.

80% of your research will come from 20% of the time you spent researching.

That’s a lot of numbers. How can you use this today?

What should you be focusing on to get you close to your writing goal?

What’s one thing you could do today for 20 minutes that will start inching you closer to your end goal? That’s what you should focus 80% of your time on now.

For some of you it will be writing your draft. For some it will be revising. Perhaps looking for an agent. Or crafting query letters. It all depends on where you’re at in the writing process.

How will you 80/20 it today?
