We've turned the old saying on its head in our own unique way because (1) it always meant that the rumblings 'round today are the stories of the future, and (2) we've long been associated with the delicious spoils of the deep-fryer so 'Chip Paper' seemed so fitting. Plus, between our podcast Chew The Fat and our debut cookbook Hot Fat with its cornet of french fries quite literally emblazoned on the cover, Chip Paper was the most fitting name imaginable!
Look, we never quite got the knack of MailChimp. It was dauntingly clunky and all marketing mumbo-jumbo, but Substack is creative, simple and exciting. Much more than just an email newsletter and an app for those who adore reading, it's a whole re-imagining and revolution of the digital content space, putting creatives in control and linking them directly to engaged audiences, right into their inboxes and at arm's reach via the app. We're using it regularly, posting weekly long-reads, international restaurant reviews and peppering it with exclusive recipes and monthly free-shots jam-packed with recommendations of recipes, restaurants, tv shows, podcasts, books and more.
Yes, it is our way to monetise the writing that takes a lot of time, effort and endless rounds of editing, but it's also the place to connect to those who really respect and relish our writing. We want to support and produce for those who support and champion is, so Substack is our big focus.
P.S. to make it extra hand-made, we don't punctuate our pieces with glossy images (except the monthly freeshot!) –– instead we hand-draw illustrations for every feature. It makes it more personal and much more tactile. Again, it takes a lot of effort but we think it makes the product so much richer, and stands out from others in our field.
