Love Equally

Love Equally

Matthew 20:12

In the parable, the workers in the vineyard are complaining to the landowner about others receiving the same pay as them. Not that their pay wasn’t enough. Not that their work was bad. But about what others received.

If the issue was about their pay they would’ve asked for more. If the issue was about their working conditions they would have asked for better working conditions. Or stopped doing it. But their complaint is about other workers getting the same pay.

If the landowner is God and the workers are God’s invited people, the workers’ complaint is about everyone being equal in the eyes of God. How can God treat others the same for all the work we have done?

God’s mercy and compassion, however, comes from the love that God is. The view that we can work for God’s love is a human one. To love everyone unconditionally is divine. Are we able to understand God better in God’s equal love to all?

Who is someone we cherish so much? Do we love them equally as the person who upsets us the most? How can we begin to show love to everyone equally just as God does?
