Oct 28, 2020

Popup scam is the most popular internet scam and American public has lost billions of dollars in this scam. These popups mostly come through the malicious softwares, untrusted links and free porn web-sites . Here are few examples of popups which come to the Windows and Macintosh.

In these popups, a false warning message comes which tells you that your computer has infected with the viruses or hacked by hackers. To prevent loss of your data and personal information, please call on the given Toll Free Number where they claim to be from Windows/Apple.

When you make a call on the given toll free number, they ask you to share your computer screen through a remote software like GoToAssist/AnyDesk/TeamViewer and many others. Then they ask you about your personal information like Name, Email, Mobile No, Address, after that they show you fake calculations (to show fake connections, viruses etc) using some Windows terminal commands. Then they pitch you for the support packages and ask you to write your Credit/Debit card information (Name on Card, Card number, Expiry date, CVV) on the notepad. If you disagree to buy, they sometimes crash your computer Windows.

How to remove fake pop-up?

First of all, switch of your internet connection. Then press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select ‘Task manager’. Highlight your browser from the list and right click on it. Then, click ‘End task’ to close your browser. When you reopen your browser, ensure that it is set to block pop-up windows and not reopen the last opened page.
