Essay "Eating habits"

Essay "Eating habits"

Oct 26, 2020

Eating and its effects going in many ways within a family and society in general – herein lies the main idea of the two texts. As a ritual, eating process has always been part and parcel of humankind history. However, it was not until a several decades ago that we started to relegate a wholesome mealtime to an ad hoc affair forgetting about its powerful role in terms of interpersonal relationship or health.

To exemplify, the first passage pinpoints that we have come to dismissing family round-ups as unimportant things – things the essence of which has been reduced to eating just for the sake of survival. Granted, our bodies are fuelled by food enriched with nutrients, amino acids and other much needed substances for vitality, but more to that, eating together is a paramount intimate moment for reconnection and reinforcing family ties and one another’s attachment. Generally speaking, not much is needed to foster trusting and caring relationships with our beloved ones, at times sharing a mealtime can do the trick.

In terms of global perspective, it is also eating traditions and rituals that have largely shaped our perception of other countries. Indeed, national cuisine is very illustrative of cultural identity and local colour, making world-renowned culinary delights and customs what to be proud of. Solemn tea ceremony in Japan or Ukrainian borsch are a case in point.

In contrast with this, the second text makes a convincing point for a threatening tendency of consuming processed, thus junk and unhealthy food. This is obviously true that with so hectic a pace of life people have to opt for food that takes less than no time to be prepared. Convenience notwithstanding, deleterious effects are known to take place after eating it on a daily basis, taking its toll on the function of the whole body.

This is what particularly resonates with me as a health-conscious person. I do believe that half of diseases are stemming from malnutrition. Even though home-made food may turn to be much more expensive especially for those with low disposable income, yet health is the best asset to invest in, to say nothing of how much joy and affection shared cooking may bring.
