Blog #2: Nocturnal

May 03, 2021

Maybe one of the reasons I love coffee is that I am nocturnal. I also suffer from insomnia sometimes.

My brain functions better at night and I have more energy to do creative things in the wee hours. Having a full-time job with a 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift is a big struggle at times. Being a nocturnal person, I don't find sleep earlier than midnight. It's usually 1 or 2 a.m. and when insomnia hits bad, I don't get to have sleep.

I tried drinking tea and buying essential oils to calm my nerves and fall asleep earlier. Sometimes they work, but most of the time they don't. I never tried sleeping pills because I just didn't want to intake too many meds.

You could probably guess that most of my stories were also written during the wee hours. I enjoy it because everyone is asleep, it is quiet and I have no distractions. Well, aside from occasionally checking social media.

I read somewhere that night owls have a 10% higher risk of dying sooner than larks, or morning people. I am not really sure if that should bother me because I have this belief that we all die anyway. Regardless if we are owls or larks, someone will die earlier than the other if it's their time to go.

Sometimes, I do wish I can be a lark sometimes and enjoy waking up early in the morning. Maybe go for a jog as the sun starts to shine and go to work early with a big smile on my face.

But for now, that's wishful thinking. I will just have to enjoy being an owl.
