008: “You have to show, not tell.” Disney-fying Philippine Mythology & Commentary on Netflix Original Series, Trese
[FYI- SPOILER ALERTS INSIDE!!]
Jen, Nani, Sapphire Sandalo of the Stories with Sapphire podcast (AKA “the spooky queen”), & resident historian of the Bulosan Center for Filipinx Studies Stacey Anne Baterina Salinas tsismis about the new Netflix Original Series based on the 2008 Filipino Comic, Trese.
The series follows the story of detective & baybaylan, Alexandra Trese, as she serves as an intermediary between the human & supernatural worlds of Manila to solve crimes. It depicts the corrupt nature of politics in the Philippines, & in true Filipinx fashion, explains there’s always some spiritual reason as to why things happen the way they do due to the mythological factors at play.
Imagining the difficulty in turning an entire comic book series into a 7-part TV series (approx. 25 min/episode), we critique the show’s production, intentionality in upholding cultural gender tropes re: casting choices & voice acting skills, and its ability to translate the narratives of traditional (Tagalog) Philippine folklore for a naive, American audience.
