Hoy necesitamos tu ayuda para entender mejor. Tres expresiones, I used to do something. I usually do something , y la tercera es I'm used to doing something. Entonces nosotros usamos soler o solía en la conjugación del pasado. Yo solía hacer algo o yo suelo hacer algo.
Gregory:
Yo suelo hacer algo es I tend to do something, I usually do something
Joffre:
Y que pasa con I used to do something?
Gregory:
Yo solía hacer algo, sí.

Si es algo que hacías en el pasado, pero que ya no lo haces en el presente. How often do you do or did you do that in the in the past when you used. I used to. It is something that you did a lot of times every day or…
Gregory:
In the case of doing something habitually. For example, every Saturday I used to run in the park. You would say that in Spanish
Joffre:
Si, nosotros diríamos Yo solía ir al parque todos los sábados, pero no necesariamente tiene que ser todos. Puede ser una costumbre, pero en algún momento puede que no lo hacías. Por ejemplo, tú dices Yo solía ir al parque los sábados, pero un sábado no fuiste. Todavía puedes usar. Yo solía, I used to. Yo solía porque no necesariamente todo el tiempo.

Yes, you could go often but not always. It just signifies a repeated action. But it's not, it doesn't mean necessarily that you'd always go.
Joffre:
Okey, it’s exactly the same in Spanish con solía. Es algo que hacías, pero no lo haces. Y es algo que hacías comúnmente. Ahora, después de solía. Tú lo usas con el infinitivo. Yo solía comer. Yo solía jugar. Es decir, con las ar, er, ir. Yo solía jugar. Yo solía cantar. Yo solía reír.
Gregory:
Sí. Es exactamente la misma cosa en en. En inglés se usa el infinitivo. I used to go. I used to make. I used to sing. I used to play.

Escuchemos un ejemplo con nuestra amiga Ambar desde Venezuela.

Cuando comencé a estudiar en la universidad tuve que mudarme a la casa de mis papás, pero para que no se sintieran tan mal, yo solía visitarla los fines de semana. En esa visita, mi mamá y mi papá solían prepararme comida deliciosa, la cual además me enviaban para que tuviera durante la semana y así no sintiera la ausencia en casa.

I used to live in London, but now I live in Ecuador. I used to travel to work on the underground, but now I walk to my computer. I didn't used to jog much, but now I'm used to jogging a few times a week.

Y cómo harías una pregunta tú usando I used to. Por ejemplo, en español yo te preguntaría qué solías hacer Gregory cuando eras un niño. Por ejemplo
Gregory:
Mm hmm. En inglés se dice what did you used to do. So we used that did formula en inglés and what is a question word. So what did you used to know in all forms. What did we, what did they, what did with all the, all the different subjects. If you want to know directly whether the action was an action in the past that was eventually done, did you used to sing? Did you used to play? Did you used to cook?

Ok, y en español es solías cocinar, solías jugar y cuando no se sabe el objeto es qué solías hacer o qué solías jugar, o a donde solías ir.
Gregory:

Joffre:
En resumen, cuando utilizas la expresión yo solía en inglés, es I used to doing something. Usamos el infinitivo. Yo solía comer, reír y en inglés I used to do something igual el infinitivo. I used to eat, I used to play, I used to do whatever you used to do.
Joffre:
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre I used to que se relaciona con solía? Yo solía. Y I'm used to, I am used to doing something.
Gregory:
That's how to differentiate that between. I used to do something I used to and I am used to, I'm used to indicate that I have done it in the past and it is. It has become a habit. Mm hmm. I'm used to doing so, it feels good to do that. I'm used to doing that, but I used to do it just indicates it was regularly happening in the past.
Joffre:
En pasado, sí. Y en español tenemos igual, Soler. Yo suelo hacer algo que es I usually do someting, como tú explicaste, pero el I am used to es el Yo estoy acostumbrado, como que tú lo haces normalmente y como que tu cuerpo o tu persona o tú estás acostumbrado a hacer esto, como que no hay mucho trabajo o no es mucho trabajo para ti hacerlo. Por ejemplo, yo estoy acostumbrado a despertarme a las o levantarme a las 5 de la mañana. Estoy acostumbrado a eso. Y podrías decir lo mismo. I’m used to waking up at 5 am.

Yes, I'm used to waking up at five a.m.

En español tenemos. Yo solía más infinitivo, yo suelo más infinitivo y yo estoy acostumbrado a más infinitivo en inglés ¿cuáles serían las tres?
Gregory:
En inglés, I tend to or I usually plus infinitive and I used to. This is in the past I used to plus infinity and then the idea of being accustomed to we'd say yes. So in English we can say that I'm accustomed to, which is parallel to the Spanish. Right. And that's I'm used to
Joffre:
Escuchemos un ejemplo con nuestra amiga Ambar desde Venezuela.

Normalmente no me gustan los que son las aglomeraciones de personas ni hacer colas interminables. Por eso cuando comenzó la pandemia, eh? Todo lo que son las compras las suelo hacer por internet. Además, suelo utilizar las tarjetas o transferencias, por lo que ya no tengo que ir al banco a buscar efectivo y eso me parece súper chévere.

When I lived in England, I didn't used to eat much rice, but now I live in Ecuador. I'm used to eating it often. I'm getting used to speaking Spanish. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the Four Seasons in one day at the weekends, I usually go for a bike ride, a hike or visit some friends. I usually visit my family and friends in England at least once a year. I usually wake up quite early.
