7 Of The Cutest Teddy Bear Dogs You'll Ever Meet

Feb 21, 2023

Teddy bear dogs aren't actually a breed, according to Jo Myers, DVM at Pawp, an online veterinary service. It is rather used to describe the dog's adorable appearance, which resembles that of a teddy bear. These dogs are usually hybrids, usually mixed to achieve a certain look or allergen status.

There's nothing cuter than these little toy dogs. They're happy, playful, and cuddly. These dogs love to impress their owners with cute tricks and stunts, and they're totally dedicated to making them happy. In addition to being involved in every family activity, Teddy Bear puppies love cuddles, games, and training.

Teddy Bear puppies are sometimes called Zuchons or Shichons and are crossbreeds between Shih Tzus and Bichon Frises (Teddy Bear Shichons) or Shih Tzus and Maltese (Teddy Bear Mal-Shi).

With their petite stature, soft and cuddly coats, and cute round faces, they are truly teddy bears in appearance.

There are so many choices to choose from, so we put together a list of the top teddy bear dog breeds.

#1. Shichon

A shichon makes a great pet for pet parents of any age. Shichons are mixed breed dogs. They're a mix of Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise. These puppies got some of the best traits from both of their parents. They are friendly, smart, and outgoing. These little pups don't need much exercise, but they love playing and cuddling!

#2. Morkie

It's hard to look away from those twinkling, brown eyes and that bright, fluffy coat. The Morkie is a small, loyal, affectionate, and energetic mix of Maltese and Yorkshire terriers. This little toy dog loves to play, and lap time is one of the most enjoyable parts of his day. You can play fetch or tug-of-war with her every day, and she'll cuddle with you afterwards.

#3. Schnoodles

Smart, active, and adorable, the Schnoodle has become a popular hybrid dog breed. They’re a cross between the Poodle and the Schnauzer and can be found in many colors. A curly-haired cutie, this dog is incredibly bright, devoted, and humorous. Schnoodles can be tiny or giant, since they have Schnauzer and Poodle parents. Whatever size your Schnoodle is, you can expect some snuggles. Teddy bear dogs are famous for their calm demeanors, high intelligence, and low-allergen coats. It's fun for Schnoodles to lounge around, play with puzzle toys, and train.

#4. Cavapoo

Your heart will be melted by the snuggly Cavapoo. They're bred for companionship, with the social skills of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the intelligence of a poodle. Cavapoos are gentle and adaptable, so you can expect lots of affection from them (and back!). Children, adults, and seniors all love these lovable lap dogs because of their pleasant personalities. Look at their fluffy coats and floppy ears if their personalities don't already say "teddy bear."

#5. Maltipoo

Maltipoos are a popular crossbreed between Maltese and Poodles known for their playful personalities. With their charming personalities, they'll fit into any house or apartment, whether it's a family with kids or an elderly single person. Maltipoos are devoted lap dogs, but they love playing fetch and playing with their favorite toys to burn off their energy.

#6. Malshi

Malshis are a relatively new hybrid breed that got their start around the 1990s. They've been gaining popularity in recent decades. Malshis, a winning cross between a Maltese and a Shih Tzu, are eager to please and easy to adore. Their favorite spot is on their guardian's lap, and they want to spend most of their time in their company. Malshis gets along with almost everyone and is an excellent addition to most families. Malshis enjoy indoor play and puzzle games, even though they only need a brief amount of daily activity.

#7. Bichon Frise

Bichon Frises are outgoing, humorous, and lively dogs. Regardless of whether you're a human or a pet, the Bichon Frise is eager to befriend you. These white, fluffy balls are suitable for allergy sufferers.

"[The bichon frise] has a very tight, curling hair coat that is said to shed less than many other breeds," Myers explains. "Although no dog is entirely hypoallergenic, those with dog allergies may be able to tolerate this breed better if his skin is kept healthy and clean."

Buying guide for Teddy Bear Dogs

Choosing an ethical breeder is critical because these dogs are mixed breeds and in high demand. Choose a breeder who lets you meet the puppies and the parents, provides health records, and screens potential owners.

The type of dog you choose should be a good fit for your family and lifestyle, so it's wise to do some research. I think it's especially important when it comes to these types of dogs to ensure you get them from a breeder who is doing their part to avoid health problems.
