Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking with some amazing women on Clubhouse. One of them was a 17-year old girl from Belgium who has big dreams of becoming a screenwriter. After my lecture, she asked me an interesting question about our writing spaces. "How do we find the perfect place to write when our home is too crowded?"
Ever since COVID-19, it has been extremely hard for writers (like myself) to flock to places, such as coffee shops, libraries, and bookstores. Now, for those of you who know me, you know that those three places are my places for when I want to quiet my mind, sit down, and write for hours.
Unfortunately, a lot of screenwriters, poets, book authors, and novelists have been regulated to simply writing in their homes, which can be a lot if they are sharing a living space with multiple people.
Here's the million-dollar question.
How do we cultivate our own writing spaces where we can concentrate now that so many of our safe havens have been removed?
This is where we have to get creative and think of the possibilities that are still available to us. If you are the type of person who loves being outside in nature, glancing at a body of water, or watching the birds fly, then writing at a nature park or a playground would be a great option.
If you are somebody who loves watching the sunset, maybe you could write in your backyard. It's all about how you set the tone and create the mood so that you are calm, centered, and at peace when you begin your creative process.
Always remember that your creative space matters. The good news is that it is up to us to determine the right environment and space for us.
