Does God do the tempting?

Does God do the tempting?

Nov 15, 2021

Ya know, I can't even remember how long its been that I have heard the phrase "God is tempting me" or something along those lines. I have even heard "I know something good is coming because God is surely tempting me lately"

This is surely some sort of lunacy. It is clearly stated in the book of James that God, cannot, tempt. He can't.

Why?

Let me just quote the Bible verse itself:

James 1:12-15 ESV
"12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."

James clearly states that there is no temptation in God. God cannot be tempted for sin, because He. Is. God. Plain and simple. If God could be tempted with sin, then He would not be God. Also, if God could tempt you with evil, then He would not be God. For there is no evil in God.

Our temptation comes from our own desire(s). Here, James doesn't even blame Satan. He talks of our own desires. Our own desires to sin. We have a sinful nature. We do, its true. We are the ones who have the choice to open our Bibles, pray, think of God in each an every moment; or, we can open the interwebs, look at porn, fight on social media, think gruesome thoughts about the one who just cut us off in traffic, blame the weather for our plights, or any other number of sins we do throughout the day. All the while keeping our own desires between us and the Loving Grace of our God.

This is the gift of Free Will. Even if you are saved in Christ, and are truly Born Again, we still struggle with sin. But make no mistake, we cannot blame God for our sin. We cannot even blame Satan. We can only blame ourselves.

It is good practice to repent everyday, at least - I say at least because the more you grow in your walk with Jesus the Messiah, the more you will start "catching" your sins as they are happening and start repenting immediately,; at least this is what is happening for me - take the guidance from Alcoholics Anonymous, the 10th Step guides you into a daily personal inventory and repentance of the wrongs you have done.

You can do this, we can do this, take responsibility for your own sins, beg God for forgiveness and draw near to our Lord and Savior each and every moment of everyday, asking Him to reveal Himself to you.

Remember, there are absolutely no works that will save you, no amount of reading, no amount of knowledge, no amount of practices that will save you from your/our sinful selves.

All we have to do is believe and repent, as the words of Jesus states.

Mark 1:15 "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

God be with you throughout your day.
