Another fab event at #Pollokshields #Library yesterday! We had a whole host of individuals coming with their own ideas and unique creative style- more pictures to follow soon!
I set up this event so participants can #play. Sometimes we forget that every great artist OR great arts enthusiast most probably had that moment of untrammelled creative play and exploration, that moment of ‘ah something here!’ that is attached to their own agency of creative power. There are not enough opportunities for this.
At the Dance & Costume Workshop (every Thursday 3-6 at the Pollokshields Library) it is just this. I provide a host of materials, including inspiration from costume/fashion masters via our library #books and the kids and adults come and ‘get stuck in’. As we are making they are watching one another and feeding off each other’s creativity and ideas. Shy and reticent individuals become more confident as they see it’s not about ‘being perfect’ but about play. Kids who might think ‘creativity is not for them’ get drawn in by the sheer magnetism of the materials.
Was delighted to see families from across our four primary schools there, as well as nursery families and families from other schools. It was a real melting pot of people from all sorts of backgrounds, which is a genuine representing of our very diverse community. It didn’t matter if English was their first language or if they were not confident to mix normally we could all make stuff together.
Being able to participate in a shared creative activities gives us an opportunity to find a common meeting point where (in the world) we might not cross over. I love this. Sometimes we get so busy fighting against the world we don’t want, we forget to create opportunities for developing the one we do.
Thanks to Southside Housing and Pollokshields Library for providing the space and resources for this beautiful activity, from the smalls to the talls it was GREAT. (*note our royal library staff :D)
