Continental Divide Trail Thru-Hike

Continental Divide Trail Thru-Hike

Apr 06, 2022

It is that time again! In 2019 I set out to thru-hike (hike end to end) the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada. The winter went long and hiking was tough. After a few grueling months and lots of alternate routes around the snowed-out San Juan mountain range, I decided to end that hike approximately halfway through in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

It has never sat well with me that I didn't finish. This year I have the opportunity to try the hike again, so I am going to restart from the Mexican border and try once again to hike all roughly 3000 miles via continuous footsteps to Canada. This will be my "big hike" for 2022.

I plan to create media around this hike. First and foremost, I will post frequent blog updates with photos on my website, Unfettered Footsteps. I will also post some updates and photos from time to time via Instagram and Facebook. Lastly, I will be filming on this hike, bringing more equipment than I ever have before on a hike of this magnitude! I plan to produce a documentary about this hike via the Unfettered Footsteps YouTube Channel. I may do a few video updates for channel subscribers along the way, but the real meat and potatoes will be released after I finish the hike. I want to produce something of exceptional quality (for me), so trying to do it on the trail is not realistic.

I'm excited about this upcoming adventure and I think you all for your support! Go subscribe to my blog, if you're not already, as I will be posting pretty regularly from here on out. I have some pre-hike topics to discuss, such as gear, logistics, the routes I'm taking through New Mexico, etc.

I'm most nervous about my legs holding up. I injured myself on a hike this past fall and have been recovering from that. It has gone well, but this is a demanding hike. I'm glad that the desert section is relatively flat, as that should help ease me in. Countering that however is the need to make miles on a long trail where water sources can be very far apart, and the oncoming winter can arrive quite early just as the outgoing winter can linger late. It will be a race to get to the Canadian border before the first snows begin to fall! I hope you'll join me for the adventure!
