Russian Football Still Never Ends Winter

Dec 21, 2023

The Russian Football Association (RFU), which was kicked out of the international stage due to the invasion of Ukraine, gave up switching to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) again this year.

Reuters reported on the 20th that RFU considered changing its affiliation from UEFA to AFC and decided to improve relations with UEFA instead of rejecting it.

Since invading Ukraine in February last year, Russia has been expelled from all international stages, including international matches and national club competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA.

Russia has called Iraq, Cameroon, and Cuba to play friendly matches without FIFA's permission, but participation in international competitions remains uncertain. Unlike soccer, some sports can be participated as individuals.

For this reason, the RFU continued to review a new start at the AFC through behind-the-scenes contacts. The RFU's renewed voting on the AFC transition, which was rejected at this time last year, is a good guess of its will.

RFU Director Mikhail Gershkovic explained, "We discussed the conversion of the AFC, but we unanimously opposed it because there was no guarantee that FIFA would approve it."

Now that UEFA remains, the only way left is to mend fences, the same conclusion as last year. FIFA and UEFA will not restrict Russia from holding friendly matches, and for the time being, only exchanges with neighboring countries will likely take place. 메이저사이트

RFU President Alexander Dukov announced a friendly match against Serbia in March next year on social networking services (SNS) on the day the AFC switch was rejected.
