Taste of Sacredness

Taste of Sacredness

Apr 06, 2022

I was blessed to be invited to a Ramadan breakfast with a beautiful family. When asked what I did for a hobby and said poet, I was asked to read a poem. It took some time to find one that would be appropriate for the moment. Just before eating, I told this poem. I was not prepared for the impact.

Do not seek to be Sacred,
no need seeking fulfilling;
you are full.
A sturdy bucket of
tenderness, drawn up
the dark way of the well.

Honour the treasure
turned from the task
of seeking to find.
Something or no thing
lifts the divine in you.
As light compels you to
aspire to that which reveals
the very best of you.

Claim your power;
freedom is, love is,
joy is, freedom…
All is set in place
before the altar
of this being,
this you, who
created illusion of you.
The delusional sweet
and bitter taste of feeling,

‘If only’.
You are the cup.
The chalice is full;

taste your sacredness.

Only Salim speaks English. As I completed the poem he jumped up, wiping his eyes, apologised and left the room. Then I noticed Soufia's eyes had welled up too. The rest of the family showed appreciation. Salim returned and apologised for crying, we explained tears are a good response to a poem. It means you can feel it. Soufia was still tearful, she explained in Darija, touching her heart. Words were not needed, though Salim explained that Soufia felt the emotion even though she didn't understand the words.

I feel so blessed and honoured.
