Kingston Tame The Lions For Third Straight Win

May 16, 2022

Kingston continued their current winning run with a strong 54-point win against Padthaway on Saturday. Kingston won their third game in a row after opening the game right up in the fourth quarter after the game had been a struggle for three quarters with neither team showcasing the clean skills needed to really break away from the other team.

Padthaway kicked the first goal of the game through Nathan McCarthy to get the Lions off to the best start they could want on the road. Kingston wasted chances in front of goal until Todd Lockwood finally got the Saints first goal on the board to put them in front. Kingston kept attacking as Jed Castley, Henry Lawrie and Cody Benson were doing some great work around the packs. Padthaway worked the ball forward and Joe Teakle kicked a goal to put the Lions in front. Darcy Boyanton, Will Rivers and Thomas Edwards had started in good form for Padthaway. Kingston took the lead right before quarter time as Kingston forward James Siviour kicked a goal for the Saints. Henry Lawrie, Campbell Watts and Hagan Wright started the game well for the Saints.

Kingston opened up a break in the second quarter with the only four goals of the quarter going their way. Goals from James Siviour, Travis Burns, Ethan Murdock and Hagan Wright had Kingston looking good at half time when they were up by 28-points at the long break. Will Watts was everywhere gathering touches for the Saints. Henry Lawrie, Chad Wood, Hagan Wright, Ben Warner, Jed Castley and Cody Benson were really working the ball around the ground and getting it going Kingston's way. Padthaway's backline was under pressure for most of the quarter. Thomas Edwards, Thomas Cooper and Jason McCarthy were doing a great job for the Lions. Kingston at the other end were not letting the Lions any easy inside 50 movement. Ben Rogers, Jacob Fisher, Brett Simpson and Campbell Watts were being ruthless. Campbell had the hard task of playing on Tobin Cox and was sticking to it tightly. Kingston's Cody Benson and Padthaway's Will Rivers were having a good contest in the ruck.

The third quarter was really ugly football to watch as both teams' skill level seemed to have been left in the changerooms at half time. The clanger count would have been high for the quarter and a frustration for both coaching staff and fans watching on from the sidelines. Cody Marshall kicked the quarter's only goal as the Lions were the only team to put any sort of scoreboard pressure on during the quarter. The visitors kicked 1-6 to Kingston's 0-2 for the quarter and most of the Lions behinds came with a rush towards the end of the quarter. Kingston went in to three quarter time 18-points ahead. Padthaway held Kingston to two points for the quarter and Thomas Edwards was having a great game for the Lions. Thomas Cooper and Jason McCarthy were helping Edwards try and send the ball back whenever the Saints attacked.

Kingston started the fourth quarter determined to attack right from the start of it and the Saints got two quick goals from Thomas Rogers and Todd Lockwood to push the margin out to 33-points and the Saints could smell blood. Henry Lawrie, Hagan Wright, Ben Warner and Cody Benson were working around getting clearances and the ball going the Saints way. Kingston used the great foot skills of Campbell Watts and Brett Simpson when they moved the ball off half back or switched the play and this was helping to open up the Lions zone defence. Ethan Murdock put through another goal and James Siviour who was marking everything that came his way, put through another two goals as Kingston were right on top and pushed the margin out to 54-points by the time the final siren had gone.
