Mundulla prove too strong for the Demons

Sep 05, 2022

Mundulla kept their quest for a fourth straight Kowree Naracoorte-Tatiara Premiership alive after they defeated Naracoorte by 76-points on Sunday.

The Tigers took control of the game in the first quarter and never really looked back. Naracoorte got the first goal of the game through Will Walker to give them confidence and an early lead. Mundulla then flicked a switch and players like Jake McGrice, Daniel Noll, Darcy King and Nick Mosey really controlled the play. William Nankivell and Jake McGrice were damaging in front of goal as both kicked two goals in the first quarter. A 30-point lead at quarter time was the reward for the Tigers fast start.

Things were the same in the second quarter as Mundulla controlled the play again. William Nankivell was burning the grass constantly with his speed. He quickly had two more goals on the board in the early stages of the second quarter. Darcy King, Jake McGrice and James Hinge added more goals before the half time siren came around and the game was out of control for Naracoorte. Darcy King's inclusion back in to the team just transforms the way Mundulla move the ball as he is very hard to stop. Naracoorte struggled to get anything going. The Demons prime movers in Matt Willson, Josh Cother, Rory Taggert and Keenan Jacobs could not get any great run going or link up play to do any damage on the scoreboard. Any time the Demons went forward, Jack Guy and Tom Gaden were ready to send the ball back the other way. Mundulla led by 65-points at the long break.

Darcy King continued the goal kicking run for the Tigers in the third quarter as he got the first goal of the second half. Naracoorte were fighting harder in the second half though and got some reward when Sam Willson and Rory Taggert put through goals. Bart Nolen and James Mac Donald battled hard to help the Demons be more competitive. Matt Willson and Josh Cother tried to provide the Demons with a bit more run than they could get in the first half. Daniel Burgess put through another goal for Mundulla, but the Demons fought hard in the third and won the quarter after Rory Taggert got a late goal to try and start a long climb back towards respectability. William Limbert, Jamie Bettoncelli and Keenan Jacobs had good quarters for the Demons. Darcy King, Jake McGrice, Travis Wagenkneckt and Jack Guy had great quarters for the Tigers.

Mundulla put the foot down again in the fourth quarter as William Nankivell was having the game of his life. William kicked his 5th and 6th goals of the game early in the fourth quarter as the Tigers looked to run the game out strongly. Darcy King had a strong game in his return and he added his third goal of the game. Mundulla then had a rare celebration as Lachlan Duell was able to go forward and kick a goal. Lachlan who is a gun defender, doesn't get to go forward much and get goals. This time he was able to get one and in a winning final, it would have been sweeter. Naracoorte kept fighting the game out and Rory Taggert who had a good strong game, was able to kick his third goal. Josh Cother, Matt Willson, Bart Nolen and James MacDonald battled hard to run the game out for Naracoorte. Darcy King who was best on ground was able to get the last goal of the game and his fourth as the Tigers booked their Preliminary Final date against the Crows this week with a strong performance and big win.
