What does Belief in Angels mean?

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

The second pillar of the Muslim faith is the Belief in Angels

Belief in the Angels is to affirm their existence and believe that they are a noble and great creation whom Allah created from light. A Muslim must believe their names, attributes, and actions whatever is mentioned in the Quran and the Sunnah. They are from the army of Allah and His honored slaves. They do not disobey His commands, and they do everything they are commanded to do in the most complete manner. Angels do not have wills of their own nor do they eat or drink. They are creations of Allah, and having no gender, do not procreate.

Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) said:

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination." [Quran 2:285]

''[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.'' [Quran 35:1]

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded. [Quran 66:6]

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

''I have been permitted to tell about one of Allah’s angels who bears the throne that the distance between the lobe of his ear and his shoulder is a journey of seven hundred years.'' [Reported by Sunan Abu Dawood]

The hadith narrated by 'A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''Angels were created from light. jinn were created from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from that which has been described to you (in the Quran).'' [Reported by Sahih Muslim]

The number of Angels is unknown. only some of their names have been mentioned in the Quran and the sunnah; such as Jibreel (Gabriel), Michael (Mika'eel), Israfil, Malik, and Munkar and Nakir. Allah entrusted them with great tasks, some of them are entrusted with the revelation, some of them are entrusted with taking the souls, some of them are entrusted with protecting the people, some of them are entrusted with the rain, and some of them are entrusted with the recordings deeds Allah's servants, some of them are entrusted with the task of keeping paradise, some of them are entrusted with the task of keeping hellfire, some of them are entrusted with the fetus in the wombs, some of them are responsible to carry the Throne of Allah, some of them are (Munkar and naker) appointed to question people in their graves.

Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) said:

And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them]. [Quran 69:17]

Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - it is [none but] he who has brought the Qur'an down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission of Allah, confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers." [Quran 2:97]

And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers, Noble and recording; They know whatever you do. [Quran 82:10-12]

Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael - then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers. [Quran 2:98]

I will drive him into Saqar. And what can make you know what is Saqar? It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], Blackening the skins. Over it are nineteen [angels]. [Quran 74:26-30]

Say, "The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord, you will be returned."[Quran 32:11]

Or do they think that We do not hear their ˹evil˺ thoughts and secret talks? Yes, ˹We do˺! And Our messenger-angels are in their presence, recording ˹it all˺. [Quran 43:80]

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Angels come to you in succession by night and day and all of them get together at the time of the Fajr and `Asr prayers. Those who have passed the night with you (or stayed with you) ascend (to the Heaven) and Allah asks them, though He knows everything about you, well, "In what state did you leave my slaves?" The angel's reply: "When we left them they were praying and when we reached them, they were praying." [Reported by Sahih Al-Bukhari]

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

''When one of you is buried, there come to him two blue-black angels, one of whom is [called] Munkar and the other Nakeer. They ask him, 'What did you use to say about this man?...'" [Reported by AtTirmidhi]

According to another narration, they will ask, "Who is your Lord?" "What is your religion?" and "Who is your prophet?" [Reported by Sahih Muslim]

All praises belong to Allah, the Lord of all that exists. We Invoke Allah to bestow useful knowledge upon all of us, and to guide us to righteous deeds.
