What does belief in the Messengers of Allah mean?

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Belief in Allah's messengers is one of the major fundamentals of Faith.

Belief in the Messengers of Allah means to firmly believe in all of the Prophets and Messengers from the first to the last, those whom Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) named and those whom He did not; and to believe that Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) choose and selected them to convey His guidance to mankind (to His slaves). A Muslim must believe that they were human beings, they are the best of the children of Adam, they ate and drank, they did not know anything about the unseen except for those matters about which Almighty Allah revealed to them, Allah made all of His Prophets infallible. The first Prophet was Adam (peace be on him) and the first Messenger was Noah (peace be on him). The final Prophet is the best Prophet, and he was Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); the seal of the prophets (Khaatam an-Nabiyyeen), and the best of all mankind. A Muslim must believe he sealed the message. The message he brought remains valid and legally binding until the day of resurrection.

Allah (Almighty and Exalted be He) said:

And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allah. So when the command of Allah comes, it will be concluded in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].'' [Quran 40:78]

And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know.'' [Quran 21:7]

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut." And among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.'' [Quran 16:36]

O Mankind, the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe; it is better for you. But if you disbelieve - then indeed, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. And ever is Allah Knowing and Wise.'' [Quran 4:170]

All of the Prophets and Messengers called their nations to worship Allah alone and not to associate any partners with Him in worship. They did not leave any good except they directed their nations to it, and they did not leave any evil/bad except they warned their nations against it. Their exact number is unknown, only Allah knows better. There are twenty-five prophets mentioned by name in Quran: Adam, Idrees, Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot (Loot), Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob (Yaqub), Yusuf (Joseph), Ayyub (Job), Shu'ayb, Moses, Haaroon (Aaron), Dhul-Kifl, David (Dawud), Solomon, Elisha (Al-yas), Ilyas (Elijah), Yunus (Jonah), Zakariyyaa, John (Yahya), Jesus, and Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon them all). Whoever believes in some of the Messengers and disbelieves in others, then in reality he is a disbeliever in all of them, and whoever claims Prophethood after Muhammad has committed an act of disbelief.

Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) said:

He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein. Difficult for those who associate others with Allah is that to which you invite them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].'' [Quran 42:13]

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We took from the prophets their covenant and from you and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus, the son of Mary; and We took from them a solemn covenant.'' [Quran 33:7]

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."[Quran 2:285]

Just as We have sent among you a messenger from yourselves reciting to you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and teaching you that which you did not know.'' [Quran 2:151]

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between -Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.'' [Quran 4:150-151]

All praises belong to Allah, the Lord of all that exists. We Invoke Allah to bestow useful knowledge upon all of us, and to guide us to righteous deeds.
