What does belief in the Scriptures of Allah mean?

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

The third pillar of the Muslim faith is Belief in the Scriptures of Allah.

Belief in the Scriptures of Allah means to firmly believe that Allah (the Exalted be He) revealed books to His Prophets and Messengers, in order to explain the truth and call to it. The revelation of the Scriptures is a sign of Allah's mercy and guidance from Allah. Although the Quran is His final revelation, Muslims must also believe in what their Lord revealed to the earlier Prophets. They contained the law that Allah wanted to be conveyed to the people at that time. Therefore it is not permissible to apply any of the laws from the previous books unless the Quran confirms that law.

Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) said:

O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray. [Quran 4:136]

We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allah may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.'' [Quran 57:25]

He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Qur'an. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allah will have a severe punishment, and Allah is exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.'' [Quran 3: 3-4]

From the previous books, Allah mentioned five divine books in the Quran; Among them are the scriptures of Abraham (Ibraheem), the Torah [revealed to Musa(Moses)], the Injeel (Gospel) [revealed to Eesa (Jesus)], the Zabur (psalms) [revealed to Dawud (David)], the Quran, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Previous Scriptures, according to Allah's Wisdom, used to last for limited periods of time. All of the previous revelations (books) have been abrogated by the final revelation-the Glorious Quran. Allah has directed the Ever-Glorious Qur'an to all nations and generations all over the globe until the end of this world. He has guarded it against all forms of corruption and distortion. A Muslim must use the Quran in all fields of his life including his transactions, personal affairs, and, moreover, in his morals and proper behaviors. The Glorious Qur'an must be taken as the means of arbitration in all disputes.

Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) said:

''Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, The scriptures of Abraham and Moses.'' [Quran 87:18-19]

''And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous.'' [Quran 5:46]

Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light......[Quran 5:44]

Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -''[Quran 14:1]

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.'' [Quran 15:9]

Indeed, those who disbelieve in the message after it has come to them... And indeed, it is a mighty Book. Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.'' [Quran 41:41-42]

Undoubtedly, keeping belief in some scriptures while disbelieving in others is tantamount to the overall rejection of them. Belief in Allah's Scriptures should be regarded as inseparable.

Allah (Mighty and Exalted be He) said:

That is [deserved by them] because Allah has sent down the Book in truth. And indeed, those who differ over the Book are in extreme dissension.'' [Quran 2:176]

All praises belong to Allah, the Lord of all that exists. We Invoke Allah to bestow useful knowledge upon all of us, and to guide us to righteous deeds.
