Best tip I have come across whether you're making a short, feature, or series is to keep everything in the present. Even when you're jumping around into different parts of history for flashbacks, jump-cut, or future scenarios keep it in the present. Throw the year on it, the galaxy, or which altered dimension you want your scene to take place but all the action and the dialogue is happening now.
