Apple Has a New Beast in its Arsenal: The M2 Processor

A New Design from Cupertino

M2 gives the completely redesigned MacBook Air and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro new levels of power-efficient performance and capabilities. According to Apple, the newly designed M2 chipset, sets the era of the next Apple Silicon for the upcoming Macs.


M2, built on second-generation 5-nanometer technology, improves on M1's industry-leading performance per watt with an 18% faster CPU, a 35% more powerful GPU, and a 40% faster Neural Engine. It also has 50% more memory bandwidth than the M1 and up to 24GB of fast unified memory. M2 brings all of this to the completely redesigned MacBook Air and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro, as well as new custom technologies and increased efficiency.


More Memory means More Transistors

M2's system-on-a-chip (SoC) design is built with enhanced, second-generation 5-nanometer technology and contains 20 billion transistors, which is 25% more than M1. The extra transistors improve features throughout the chip, including the memory controller, which provides 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth — 50% more than M1. M2 can also handle larger and more complex workloads thanks to up to 24GB of fast unified memory.


A Faster and an Efficient Performance

The new CPU has faster performance cores and a larger cache, while the efficiency cores have been significantly improved for even more performance gains. They deliver 18% more multithreaded performance than M1, allowing M2 to rip through CPU-intensive tasks like creating music with layers of effects or applying complex filters to photos while using very little power. 1 When compared to the most recent 10-core PC laptop chip, the CPU in M2 delivers nearly twice the performance at the same power level. M2 also outperforms the PC chip while consuming only a quarter of the power. 2 In comparison to the most recent 12-core PC laptop chip - which requires significantly more power to deliver an increase in performance and is thus found in thicker, hotter, noisier systems with less battery life — M2 provides nearly 90% of the peak performance of the 12-core chip while using one-fourth the power.


M2 also has Apple's next-generation GPU with up to ten cores, which is two more than M1. The 10-core GPU, when combined with a larger cache and higher memory bandwidth, provides a significant boost in graphics performance, delivering up to 25% higher graphics performance than the M1 at the same power level, and up to 35% better performance at its maximum power.


macOs Ventura and the New Apps

macOS was built for Apple silicon, and the combination of macOS Monterey and the powerful new M2 provides users with unprecedented performance and productivity. Mac computers powered by Apple silicon have access to the most app collection ever for Mac, including iPhone and iPad apps that can run on Mac and universal apps that unlock the full power of M-series chips.

macOS Ventura, which will be released this fall, will also take full advantage of M2, introducing new features such as Stage Manager as well as powerful new capabilities such as Continuity Camera and Handoff in FaceTime. macOS Ventura also includes significant updates to Safari, Mail, Messages, Spotlight, and other apps.


M2's power-efficient performance helps the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro meet Apple's stringent energy-efficiency standards. Apple is currently carbon neutral for global corporate operations and aims to have a net-zero climate impact across the entire business by 2030, including manufacturing supply chains and all product life cycles. This means that every chip produced by Apple, from design to manufacturing, will be carbon neutral.
