Ever have one of those things that you know you really, really (REALLY) want to do - but something just keeps holding you back?
In January, I wrote a children's picture book about using expressive arts to process emotions - the book, named after the childhood nickname I never liked but now has two namesakes, is called Nicki scribbles... I illustrated much of the book over the next 30 days, shared pieces of it with potential readers, editors, and funders and was convinced that I should crowdfund this project and bring it to life.
My office is filled with illustrations, with reference pictures, with quotes from the Alpha Readers who went through the text and got the 'behind-the-scenes' look at what I was creating and why. Lists of 'perks' available for supporters are stuck on post-its and in my companion notebook. An Indiegogo and a Kickstarter account were opened. (Ultimately, I went with Indiegogo because I can still use funds even if I don't hit the campaign's total goal). I researched the printing costs, budget for digital and physical formatting, shipping, etc.
And then, I kept finding 'other' things to do.
But 'Nicki' is persistent - and she wanted her book out there. No matter the fear of failure, the deep, dark thoughts of 'rejection' that sometimes creep in, she refused to let me walk away from the project.
So, today, the campaign is live. I have 45 days to finish the work, raise the funds, and bring Nicki's first book (I hope there are more!) to life.
