Joaquín Pasos: Chant of war

Joaquín Pasos: Chant of war

Mar 27, 2021

Joaquin Pasos was a Nicaraguan poet who dies at the age of 33 years old. He used to drink a lot of liquor that is why he die young. Like most vanguard poets, he admired Rubén Darío and at the same time wanted to overcome him. Joaquin also wrote several essays compiled by his friends after his death. The most famous poem of all is “Canto de guerra de las cosas”. It is a poem that deals with the degradation of humanity subjected to war and contempt for simple things.

Joaquin was a great poet, even compared to T. S Eliot. His poem contained certain similarities although he never met the American poet. Many poets today, such as Francisco Ruiz Udiel, encouraged young people to read poetry by Joaquin Pasos.

His poem is admirable; it contains subliminal metaphors about the war, the end of time, just like a prophet. The poem alludes to the misfortune of wars and human desolation. Specifically, it says that men are unable to see things as they are because they are blind by greed and blood. There is no translation of the poem, but it can be said that it is monumental in Latin America. As a vanguard poet, he was formed with ideas other than Rubén Darío. In this poem, he develops the problem of war. He lived through the two great wars, hence his interest in warfare. He was so moved by the war that he wrote about it. To bring people awareness about the end of time. Wars, as we all know, are cruel and merciless, few survive, and millions suffer the consequences of dictatorships and the decisions of nations.

The poet Carlos Martínez Rivas dedicated an elegy to Joaquin Pasos. A great poem in memory of all the poets and especially Joaquin. The poem titled Canto fúnebre a Joquin Pasos (Funeral Chant to Joaquin Pasos)

Joaquin Pasos never saw his writings published in books, only in magazines; however, his writings are compiled in many Latin American anthologies. Joaquin Pasos was the poet of prophecies, the poet of greatness, and enlightenment.
