A Short Rainy Season Birding Trip in Thailand

Sep 18, 2022

When most people think about the rainy season in Southeast Asia they usually think of constant rain throughout the period. This, however, is far from the truth. While parts of the late rainy season in particular can be very wet indeed, rainfall is usually in the form of storms, mostly in the late afternoon. In late August/early September I was tipped off about some exciting birds that were being seen at Kaeng Krachan National Park as well as some quite dry weather that was making a visit a very enjoyable experience.

Visiting some wetlands on the journey from Bangkok to Kaeng Krachan we spent three days visiting a variety of habitats, including the majestic forest in the national park itself, seeing almost 150 species in this short time. I have written a detailed account of the trip along with lots more photos here:

This trip included a superb encounter with Great Hornbill, one of the most impressive birds in Asia and on that I never get tired or seeing. Also pictured here are Oriental Darter, Common Flameback, Hainan Blue Flycatcher, Greater Green Leafbird (female), Puff-throated Babbler, Black-and-red Broadbill & Orange-backed Flowerpecker.
