24 March 2022 Members Edition

Hello everyone! March Madness is coming to a close, which means that the membership edition of the newsletter will be closed to the public. Don't despair though, there still is a free version of the newsletter that's available every week. There is also a WhatsApp version and a supporters version as well. I urge you to plug in because there is money to be made online.

Don't keep this to yourself though! If you know anyone who is a writer or who would do well to try their hand at this, then share this with them. You could change their life!

You can follow this newsletter on Buy Me A Coffee to get it in your inbox as soon as it is live. Just going to the site isn't enough, you have to sign up and provide a few details for you to get this in your email as soon as it is published.

Enough with the housekeeping, this week has a few remote jobs and some interesting pitching opportunities for writers.

Let's get to it!

How We Will Support You

Our core values — build trust, question assumptions, and validate direction — underpin how we work day-to-day and the support we give our team members. We strive to empower our team members to be self-directed and self-motivated in their work.

Remote First, Always: We’ve always been a fully distributed company with team members all over the world. We trust you to get your work done wherever, whenever.

Work/Life Balance: Team members have the freedom and flexibility to organize their own work schedules. We want you to thrive both in and out of the office. We trust you to use good judgment and take the time off that you need to bring your best self to work.

We also offer paid parental leave, a co-working stipend, office setup reimbursement, and a wellness stipend. For more information on how we collaborate worldwide, from leadership in our relatively flat organization to start-to-finish ownership, check out DuckDuckGo Culture: How We Work.

Consequence Forum: War and geopolitical violence

Consequence Forum covers the human consequences and realities of war and geopolitical violence. Apart from nonfiction, they publish fiction, poetry, reviews, visual art, and translations. “First and foremost, the work needs to address the human consequences and realities of war or geopolitical violence. This can include focusing on the experiences of combatants, but also victims and/or witnesses since, after all, it isn’t only combatants who are affected. Second, the work needs to have literary merit, by which we simply mean the piece needs to try to be greater than the sum of its parts. Does it inspire reflection? Insight? Anger? Joy? This is what we mean by literary merit.” For nonfiction (send up to 5,000 words), they say, “essays that are academic or strictly journalistic usually aren’t the best fit. Furthermore, we are interested in pieces that are focused and offer a unique perspective on a specific aspect of war (as opposed to more general essays that attempt to address the full scope of war).” See their FAQ. They publish online and in print. Pay is $40-80. The deadline is 15 April 2022. Details here.
