SPOKEN ENGLISH: How to talk about food?

Today’s topic is food. People like to talk about food and to find tasty, healthy food and the best places to eat. Especially we like to eat and try new meals while traveling. People often come back to a certain place just because of the food.

Food is, of course, a great way to meet people and make friends. When people share a meal, you can be sure the discussions about food, restaurants, and recipes are going to be endless. It’s an amazing way to discover a different culture through meals.

Learn some questions you can ask about food:

  1. What kind of food do you like?

  2. What would you recommend me to try in your country?

  3. What ingredients do you use often in cooking?

  4. What do you usually eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner?

  5. What do you usually eat at a restaurant?

-If you like the taste of the food you will say:

1.Delicious
Wow! Did you make that cake? It looks delicious!

  1. Tastes great!
    The meatball soup smells good and the beef noodles taste great.
    3.Good!
    We had a really good meal last night.
    4.Amazing!
    Italian food is amazing!
    5.Yummy!
    It was so yummy and I lost the recipe.

6.Flavorful!
Tons of flavorful ingredients make this pizza unique and delicious.
7.Mouth-watering!
Look at those mouth-watering desserts!

-If you don’t like the taste of the food you will say:


1.Yuck!
Oh yuck! I hate ketchup.

  1. This food is too….(spicy) for my taste!

  2. It could use a little less….salt!

  3. I prefer…fruit instead of the chocolate.

Vocabulary to describe the taste of the food:
-spicy
The ginger gives the dish a wonderful spicy flavor.
-sour
This apple is sour!
-sweet
Sugar has a sweet taste.
-bitter
Enjoy the beer’s bitter taste as you slowly drink it.
-rich
The coffee has a rich hazelnut flavor.
-bland
To make the bland taste more interesting, the locals began perking it up with local produce.


Cooking and cuisine:
Do you like to cook?
I cook every day.
I’m not a big fan of cooking.

-I take a packed lunch to work.
-I generally get something from the supermarket or get a takeaway.
-I prepare meals at home three times a day.

-I usually eat fast food.
I eat only home-cooked meals.
I am eating healthy.
I eat desserts on the weekend.

What is your favorite food?
I like deep-fried chicken and scrambled eggs.

Types of food:
red meat- lamb, pork or beef
white meat- chicken, turkey, goose, duck
fish- Salmon, Tuna, Sea Bream, Sushi
seafood- prawns, shrimps, lobster, scallops, crab
vegetables- broccoli, spinach, carrots, peppers, onions
fruit- strawberries, raspberries, apples, bananas

How food is cooked:

boiled – cooked in boiling water

steamed – cooked over a saucepan of boiling water

fried/sauteed – cooked in oil in a frying pan

stir-fried – fried fast in hot oil

pan-fried – fried in a frying pan

roasted – cooked in oil in the oven

grilled – cooked under a grill or on a ridged pan

baked – cooked in the oven

stewed – cooked for a long time on a low heat

casseroled – cooked slowly in juices

-chocolate
