Parts List - Refurbished 1982 Toyota Interior

May 16, 2022

Below you will find a parts list of tools and gadgets that were crucial in helping with this project that I recently posted on Youtube.

Please bookmark affliate links (or better yet this page) if you plan on purchasing later, affiliate links help support me in my time spent on this project. It allows me to keep bringing y'all great content, at no additional cost to you! If you want to buy me a coffee, hey that's awesome too.

I did a lot of research into each product beforehand because I'm a practical minimalist that hates spending money on things that I may have to replace with a better option later.

My local small town Jerry's / Napa autoparts store was just NOT cutting as far as having a good selection goes so I did buy all my parts off Amazon, and was glad I did because they were all sitting there in my past orders.

Almost every single item on this parts list is stuff I personalized used (I'll specify), and are items I would recommend.

• Tool apron

I have a Carhartt nail apron, but their quality has gone downhill a bit in terms of details. For instance, the middle pocket is useless due to the logo patch being sewn all the way through so I lost misplaced skinny tools a lot in the bottom of the pockets into the bottom of the big pockets. I've heard great things about the Klein apron though, so I'll be upgrading here soon. Once I got into a groove on some project days, a tool apron was all I would use and wear, a great tool for the scatterbrained.

-

• Wire wheel brush set

Used this set on the undercarriage of my truck to get rid of any surface rust (wear with a full face mask and protective goggles)

-

• Makita Drill & Impact Driver Set

I use these for so much stuff with this truck, removing rust on the undercarriage, drilling the hole in the outside of each door to properly route the speaker wire, and SO much more. I've used the impact driver to build a platform in my truck, had 3 drills going simultaneously and the Makita was by far superior. Works wonders with the wire brush set I posted in this list for wheels and undercarriage. Pull the trigger if you haven't.

-

• Makita battery charging pack

I use my boyfriend's 2 pack set of Makita batteries (and charger) if I were to need to do the whole undercarriage of my truck in one day. If I didn't have access to that something like this would actually be crucial

-

• Makita Blower

Having this handy to blow out the dash and truck as I was ripping everything out was crucial. Garage must-have.

-

• Makita Titanium coated hex drill bit set

Great for drilling into the door's hard metal to route speaker wire. Just remember to disconnect and move any pieces of the wiring harness on the inside of the truck before drilling. I think the door sensor wires that are connected to the overhead light sit right there. It would be easy enough to make the mistake if I wasn't so cautious and detail-oriented.

• Contractor grade Makita drill set

a place for everything & everything in its place. Be diligent, otherwise, it defeats the purpose of a kit.

I don't remember what I used these for but I do know that I used them more than a few times. I bought them because another hex set I had didn't have small enough pieces. It was something involving the dash.

WIRING AND ALL THINGS ELECTRICAL

`

• Retrosound Radio

This is not the stereo I installed, but if you don't want to have to bend the metal frame behind the dash bezel to fit the radio I used, this is an alternative. They have a custom-built option, just like Custom Autosound.

DISCLAIMER: DO YOUR HOMEWORK! This is not the radio I used as I said in the video but it says it fits 1982 on Amazon since it's the vehicle I have on my account) since the box is more narrow it appears that it will fit better than the one I had from Custom Autosound

Although, upon reading reviews it seems that Retrosound Radios might not last as long as Custom Autosound, so it's kind of a toss up. I submitted a request with the dimensions to see which radios will work from them and didn't receive a response unfortunately.

-

• Customer Autosound Radio

Looks like Custom Autosound listed a Toyota radio online so they may have shifting of the mount just a little bit to the right so maybe it would fit? If you already have an after-market radio installed in your truck there's a chance whoever installed that radio like with mine had already cut and pulled back the metal to fit the radio. I used the vice grips and pulled back the rest (about a 1/2 to a 1 inch).

**DISCLAIMER** I will say that if you are starting from scratch you will need to install an antenna. I was lucky and mine already had one from the 80s or 90s. Custom Autosound was pretty clear with me over the phone that the process would be different if I didn't have an antenna, so definitely talk to a professional about installation, and again do your own research before diving in. One last disclaimer, I'm not an electrician so just make sure to think smart and read articles and watch youtube videos before getting ahead of yourself.

Moral of the story is if you don't mind having to either bend or cut this bar behind the dash bezel further (not by much as you can see someone already had from the previous radio install) then you could totally go with Custom Autosound. I would compare and contrast both radios above.

• Rockford Fosgate 5.25in Speakers

These are pretty standard sizes IF you already have holes cut in your door for speakers from an aftermarket installation in your Yota, but make sure to measure.

If you want to keep things OEM and your doors remained intact they also make some 4.6in ones that look like they would go nicely in the factory spot. The ones I have bump, I was surprised, can't believe I waited 6 years to do this project.

•Wiring Kit

I bought this to route wires to the battery, thought I would use it for the speakers too but ended up going with 16 Gauge instead - but this is good to have. Good deal too + it keeps things organized.

-

• Female Spade Connectors

I cut off the vinyl part to solder the speaker wire. Sounds wasteful I know, but these fit on the back of my Rockford Fosgate speaker terminals the best. They were actually the only ones that fit snug.

-

• Craftsman Plier Set

I used a set of pliers (and safety goggles) to get vinyl part off of the female spade connectors. They also worked very well for the spade connectors.

-

•Weller Helping hands for soldering

Something I didn't have, but instead was jerry-rigging something to a workbench in the garage - it did not work as planned and I wish I had purchased this before getting started. If I were to do it again, I would not waste as much time as I did with my alternative.

-

• Molex connection latch lock to make harness adapter

I would recommend buying two because if you're like me odds are you'll ruin a few of the metal pieces during the soldering and connecting process. Do the harness adapter when you have the radio in your possession but try to do it BEFORE you take the car apart, it will take you some time.

DASH

`

• Plastic Welding Kit

Comes with metal reinforcement mesh

• Plastic Welding Rods

Depending on how bad your dash is (mine had a gaping hole) you'll probably use more than what's included in the kit, so it's not a bad idea to have extra.
