5 Whey Protein Shopping Tips

5 Whey Protein Shopping Tips

Oct 19, 2020

Whey protein is known as the most efficient source of protein for athletes and bodybuilders of all ages. It is the most bought and used supplement by athletic people of all walks of life.

There are thousands of companies that manufacture various types of whey protein products. When shopping for a whey powder, there are a few things you need to keep in mind and watch out for. Here are 5 of those things:

  1. Whey protein isolate contains the highest amount of protein (usually more than 90%) and the lowest amount of carbs (sugar/lactose). Some powders only contain insignificant trace amounts of lactose, which makes the isolate the preferred choice for people who are lactose intolerant. However, it is the most expensive form.

  2. Whey concentrate is less processed than the isolate and contains a little less protein and a higher carb/sugar content. Powders that contain a combination of whey isolate and concentrate, such as Gold Standard by Optimum Nutrition, come at a more reasonable price and yet contain a high protein content, which can be almost the same as that of pure isolates. However, due to the lactose content, people with lactose intolerance may want to avoid this and stick with the isolate instead.

  3. Most whey powders on the market taste bland and rather unpalatable when mixed with water, even those that are flavored. It's better to buy an unflavored powder, or one with a multi-use flavor like chocolate, and then blend it with some milk, fruits, and anything else you like in your shake.

  4. Avoid products that contain lots of fillers and artificial additives and go for those that contain natural ingredients.

  5. More pricey does not mean higher quality. There are many quality products in the low-mid price range, so don't waste your money on premium brands that offer the same stuff you can get for cheaper.
