ABOUT THE FLUTE: The flute M. was playing is a quena (sometimes spelled Kena in English). It is the traditional flute of the Andes. It is made of wood and is open at both ends of the instrument. To make a sound, the player must partially close the top end of the flute with the skin under the lower lip, and blow down the axis of the flute. The tongue and lips are used just like a regular recorder. The finger positions are very similar to the recorder. M. came to learn to play the quena while traveling in Peru/Bolivia in the early 70's and hearing Andean traditional music.
