Essay (Expert Proficiency coursebook; p. 126)

The space we live in and its content are of the utmost importance for any person, as it decides the comfort and quality of life – herein lies the idea of two texts complementary texts. However, each of them goes at length on different sides of the same topic.

Such is human nature that all the people are prone to collect plethora of belongings, even when they are of no longer use or function, is what the first extract says. The author of it, giving a personal example of their tendency to accumulation, outlines that we hold on to pieces of furniture or any other furnishings we probably could make do without, particularly when they are neither functional nor any longer beautiful. Indeed, we all do not much entertain the idea of doing away with things we do not need, though it might free some space for something of more usefulness or, let us say, ornaments better blending in with the interior.

The second passage, unlike the first one, expands on that having your own house is a great opportunity for creativity and self-expression. In that sense, we have free rein to experiment with the place we live in, using materials, textures, pieces of furniture exactly in the way we like it. After all, barely is there someone to know what is best for us and what is not, what wallpaper colour makes the atmosphere more conducive for relaxation or, conversely, tension and disturbance.

To conclude, home is fairly the only place of our safety and comfort. There is no room for unnecessary things or things which, in one way or another, make our living there less comfortable or of a lower quality. Spring-cleaning the house every once in a while is what can help us to keep the place well-organized and tidy, as well as feel less stressed because of  the cluttered living space.
