Dear learners 👋, in this post we will look at some examples of speech errors, and then do a short exercise. Before you start doing the exercise, you might need to read this info. ⤵️
Briefly, a speech error is a deviation (conscious or unconscious) from a standard speech pattern (a norm). Depending on the type, speech errors can be divided into lexico-semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and so on. Here are some examples:
👉 Lexico-semantic errors
❌ WRONG: подня́ть тост
✔️ CORRECT: произнести́ / сказа́ть тост, or подня́ть бока́л
❌ WRONG: во́время успе́ть
✔️ CORRECT: во́время прийти́ / прибы́ть, or успе́ть + куда́-либо
❌ WRONG: спроси́ть вопро́с
✔️ CORRECT: зада́ть вопро́с, or спроси́ть + о чём-либо, or спроси́ть + subordinate clause
👉 Syntactic errors
❌ WRONG: Преподава́тель даёт нам зна́ния и нау́чит нас реша́ть зада́чи.
✔️ CORRECT: Преподава́тель даёт нам зна́ния и у́чит нас реша́ть зада́чи. Two homogeneous predicates must have the same tense and aspect.
❌ WRONG: Поката́вшись на катке́, у меня́ боля́т но́ги. In the verbal adverb phrase, the adverbial participle must correlate with the subject of the principle clause. In other words, the adverbial phrase «поката́вшись на катке́» would be ok, if the subject of the main sentence was «я», but not «но́ги». Thus, «я» and «поката́ться» would make a predication in the paraphrased sentence «я поката́лся».
✔️ CORRECT: По́сле ката́ния на конька́х у меня́ боля́т но́ги. or По́сле ката́ния на конька́х (на катке́) я чу́вствую боль в нога́х. or Поката́вшись на конька́х (на катке́), я чу́вствую боль в нога́х. or Поката́вшись на конька́х (на катке́), я чу́вствую, как (у меня́) боля́т но́ги. or Я поката́лся на конька́х (на катке́), и тепе́рь у меня́ боля́т но́ги.
👉 Stylistic errors
Example: Молодо́й челове́к, проходя́ ми́мо са́да, уви́дел у кали́тки де́вочку, кото́рая стоя́ла и пла́кала. Он ла́сково наклони́лся к ней и, к моему́ изумле́нию, спроси́л:
– Ты по како́му вопро́су пла́чешь? (К. Чуко́вский). – ❌ WRONG, BUT is used by the speaker intentionally for creating a humorous effect (most probably, to make the girl stop crying and cheer her up), i.e. «по како́му вопро́су» is a speech pattern generally used in very formal setting and is not typical for spoken (informal) language.
Standard pattern: Ты почему́ плачешь? or Почему́ ты пла́чешь? – ✔️ CORRECT (in informal setting)
