This now classic tune is from 1974. It’s from the Average White Band. I came across this video in a dark corner of my phone..! I recorded it during the initial lockdown a couple of years ago now using an old camera if I remember correctly so forgive the video quality but the sound seems ok..plus Groove Brother Al on the congas is wearing his Hawaiian shirt to brighten the scene!
This piece was played by one of my students for his audition to the Institute of Contemporary Music in London a number of years ago. Afterwards the examiner said ‘all the other entrants have played it safe with easier pieces but you didn’t…and your performance was fantastic’. ( James Stevenson) Oh, his examiner just happened to be Amy Winehouse’s original drummer..! Anyhow, all Performance and Professional level students should have a go at this sometime - I have the chart and the backing track.
