In this video, we go over an exercise I created called "turn scales". Turn scales spaces out the speed of string crossings so that you can develop a fast picking speed without being held back by messy string crossings.
When you play a scale that includes 3 notes per string, you will play (Down Up Down, Up Down Up).
Most people get hung up on the motion between the string crossing.
To fix this, turn scales do a "turn" on each of the starting notes per string, thus spacing out the string crossing while retaining the base picking speed.
"A fast mess is still a mess."
Be sure to practice this exercise starting on both an upstroke and a downstroke!
Practice it on a clean sound first to ensure even pick string on up and downstrokes
START SLOWLY and memorize the picking pattern. If you don't have it memorized, you will struggle to play more quickly and still be clean
If your brain "skips" and is unsure of whether you just played an upstroke or a downstroke, repeat whatever scale you just played
