Turn Scales - Training Faster String Crossings

Aug 09, 2022

In this video, we go over an exercise I created called "turn scales". Turn scales spaces out the speed of string crossings so that you can develop a fast picking speed without being held back by messy string crossings.

When you play a scale that includes 3 notes per string, you will play (Down Up Down, Up Down Up).

Most people get hung up on the motion between the string crossing.

To fix this, turn scales do a "turn" on each of the starting notes per string, thus spacing out the string crossing while retaining the base picking speed.

  • "A fast mess is still a mess."

  • Be sure to practice this exercise starting on both an upstroke and a downstroke!

  • Practice it on a clean sound first to ensure even pick string on up and downstrokes

  • START SLOWLY and memorize the picking pattern. If you don't have it memorized, you will struggle to play more quickly and still be clean

  • If your brain "skips" and is unsure of whether you just played an upstroke or a downstroke, repeat whatever scale you just played
