Chapter no. 74: The Cloaked One
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
You, wrapped in your cloak,
stand up and warn!
Magnify your Lord,
purify your clothing
shun uncleanliness
and do not grant a favor
hoping to gain more
and for the sake of Your Lord, be patient.
When the Trumpet is sounded
That will be a difficult Day
For the disbelievers, not at all easy.
Leave Me with him
whom I created alone and made for him extensive wealth,
and sons by his side,
and made life very easy for him
Yet he is hungry for more.
But no!
He has been stubbornly hostile to Our verses.
I will inflict a spiraling torment on him.
Indeed he, he thought, and he plotted
Yet he still will be damned, devilishly he plotted!
once again, he'll be cursed as he plotted
Then he re-contemplated, ˹in frustration˺,
then he frowned and scowled,
then he stepped back and behaved arrogantly
and said: "This is just some magic which has been handed down;
This is nothing but the word of a man.”
I'll roast him in Saqar!
And how would you know what is Saqar?
It does not let anyone live or die,
scorching the skin.
There are nineteen angels in charge of it.
We have appointed only stern angels as wardens of the Fire. And We have made their number only as a test for the disbelievers, so those who have been given the Scripture will be certain, and those who believe will have their faith increased; neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers will have any doubts, but those hypocrites with sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers will argue, “What does Allah mean by such a number?” In this way, Allah leaves whoever He wills to stray and guides whoever He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord except He. And this description of Hell is only a reminder to humanity.
Yes--by the moon!
By the departing night!
By the shining dawn!
Surely Hell is one of the mightiest catastrophes—a warning to humankind, for anyone of you who wishes to advance or lag behind!
Every soul will be detained for what it has done,
except
the people of the right, who will be in the Gardens, asking one another about the criminals:
“What has landed you in Saqar?”
They will reply,
“We were not of those who prayed, nor did we feed the poor. We used to indulge ˹in falsehood˺ along with others, and deny the Day of Judgment until death overtook us."
So the pleas of intercessors will be of no benefit to them.
Now, what is the matter with them that they are turning away from the reminder as if they were startled donkeys fleeing from a lion?
In fact, each one of them wishes to be given a ˹personal˺ letter ˹from Allah˺ for all ˹to read˺.
Of course, it is rather because they do not fear the Hereafter. but truly
this is a reminder. Let whoever wishes to take heed, do so: But they cannot do so unless Allah wills: He is the Lord who is worthy to be feared: The Lord of forgiveness.
