Acting in Quarantine

Acting in Quarantine

Nov 11, 2020

Oof. Is that a good way to start? Sure. Oof. Quarantine, COVID, this pandemic, whatever has been kinder to me than many. I have a house, a job, a dog, a boyfriend, and said boyfriend has a job. I get to see my parents and siblings, and my friends - at a distance. So I've become accustomed to saying I'm a COVID 10/10.

But of course, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. I haven't hugged anyone but my boyfriend or my parents since March. Lots of plans have been canceled. My theatre company is shut down. Most importantly, acting gigs have been few and far between.

It feels like every time I'm building up momentum, booking film gigs, something gets in the way. In 2019, it was my health. There was no way I had the energy to drive to Virginia every other weekend. In 2020, well...it's 2020.

Now, there are measures being taken. I've been applying to a lot of remote work/shoot-from-home gigs as well as voiceover gigs. So far nothing. And while applying there's always the question of should I be working anyway? Is it safe? Am I contributing to the problem?

The Murder Mystery Company which I'm a part of has started doing Zoom shows, but nothing there yet either.

The closest I've come to film work is a quick trip to Brooklyn to shoot an acting reel. (All precautions were taken, of course.) It felt soooooo good to be in front of a camera again. Each time I'm on set I'm reminded that this is for me. I have - thankfully - been pursuing the right thing all along.

I suppose the biggest thing to come out of this quarantine is my new dedication to exercise. After trying a few different things I've settled on Beachbody On Demand. They call it "Sweatflix," which is actually an apt name. There are lots and lots of programs to choose from. I've done 21 Day Fix, A Little Obsessed, Cize, and now I'm on week four of Barre Blend. This one has been my favorite so far. You can follow my progress on Instagram.

This vigor towards fitness is part of my goal to star as Felicia Hardy, The Black Cat, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm putting it out there. I have no agent, no major credits, so I'm doing the promoting myself. #FitforFelicia. They've announced a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie at some point in the future. Someone has to play Black Cat. Why not me?

"If not me, who? If not now, when?"
