Thorns in the Dust (LIVE Honeytone Session) 🦋

Oct 13, 2022

I originally wrote this song for a New York theatre production. They gave me the title 'Broken Flowers' to work with and, well... as you know I prefer things on the dark and evocative side so it wasn't long before I changed it to the more atmospheric title 'Thorns in the Dust'.

The original version was fully produced with drums, etc in a totally different style... they needed something uptempo in a Post Punk/New Wave style. I'll try to find the original version to share for your amusement at some point in the future.

But for now, I hope you enjoy my Ember-ised version! ✨😉🦋✨

Lyrics:

“The eleventh hour closes
I dread the truth I know,
Hold these dying roses
afraid to let them go,
But life goes on after all
If only you could just,
Let the petals fall
And leave these Thorns in the dust”

Your melancholy roses
Cry petals on the floor
Their velvet tears are falling
In a pool of crimson outside my door

How can you pretend
That treachery and lust
Has any other end

Than thorns in the dust
You can cry if you must
For the thorns in the dust
How can I ever trust you now?

This haunting scent of roses
Lingers in the hall
Coiling like seduction
Have to catch myself before I fall

How can you ever mend
Disintegrating trust
With nothing to extend

But thorns in the dust
You can cry if you must
For the thorns in the dust
How can I ever trust you now?
