Weekly Prompt: Three!

Weekly Prompt: Three!

Nov 16, 2020

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all keeping well and safe during November. I also hope you are keeping occupied and being inspired by the creative prompts that I send out each week.

It's really brilliant to see the artwork that's being posted on the members-only Facebook group. It's exciting to see how differently people interpret the prompt. I'm finding your work and input inspirational so I thought I'd set a really broad idea for this week to see where it takes you, and each other.

This weeks prompt is 'three' and you can interpret it any way you like. There are only a couple of rules...

I'd like you to draw three things. They have to be connected in some way.

They could be...

  • Three items that are the same colour (but have no other relationship)

  • Three people

  • Three objects collected on the same walk (see my shells and leaves example)

  • Three items that begin with the same letter

Why three?

Compositionally, artists like to use odd numbers rather than even. When you start observing even number of objects it can feel too symmetrical, or forced. You will often see still-life compositions with 3 or 5 items which gives a more naturalistic feel. The same rule is often applied to curated visual landscapes, like planting out in gardens. The 'rule of three' is also to be found in literature and rhetoric. Apparently, as humans, we find it 'satisfying and more likely to remember' when words, ideas and images come in threes.

Here are some visual prompts to get you thinking, but they are just that, prompts, you can draw any three things you like.... as long as the follow the criteria above. I hope you enjoy this one and I look forward to seeing your creations!
