How to hike the highest mountain in Taiwan: Jade Mountain

Oct 30, 2022

Hey hiking friends,

I hope you are doing great. I did a hike from Batongguan Historic Trail to Jade Mountain this August. Hiking Jade Mountain (or Yushan) is many people's dream, and this trail also attracts many people from other countries.

In this post, you will find the complete guide on how to do Jade Mountain, from the easiest route to the most difficult one, how to apply for hiking permits, arrange public transport, and more.

I also made spreadsheets so you can know what to do when you need to apply for permits.

We didn't apply for Paiyun Lodge because we hiked from Batongguan Historic Trail to Jade Mountain and exited from Tataka Trailhead. This route was a more advanced hike, and it was exhausting. However, I saw Jade Mountain peaks from different sides, which was fantastic.

We often joke that applying for permits at Paiyun Lodge (the place to stay before hiking to Jade Mountain) is more challenging than the hike, and the application process on the Yushan National Park website might be overwhelming for foreign nationalities.

This is a long post, but you can go directly to those sections if interested. I hope you will find the info in this post helpful.

If you are considering doing Jade Mountain in one day, here are the things you need to know before your hike.

Please let me know your thoughts about this hike or if anything is confusing in the post.

Have a great day, and I'll talk to you later.

Anusha
