Step-by-Step: Heron's Lunch

Step-by-Step: Heron's Lunch

Feb 12, 2023

This guy is awfully proud of his catch, don't you think?

It's been a while since I unpacked my chalks, so last month I worked on small project with a familiar subject. Birds are among my favorite creatures to paint with pastels, because the chalks are so perfectly suited to the texture of feathers.

Nowadays I enjoy regular encounters with these long, lean, beach-combing harbor-strutting locals. Here on the panhandle, the Great Blue Heron is almost a domesticated species, and it's also common to catch a glimpse of a white heron's glowing wingspan overhead, while their smaller, shyer cousin - the green heron - skulks through the brackish waters around the salt marshes.

Here's a look at the start-to-finish. The canvas is an 8x10 piece of suede mat board.

Now you're ready for seafood. Enjoy!
